Frequently Asked Questions

What is flu?

The flu, or better known as Influenza, is an upper respiratory illness caused by the influenza A, B, and C viruses. The flu may develop into a more serious condition such as pneumonia. This is especially true for young children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with immunocompromising health conditions such as asthma, heart disease or diabetes. Flu symptoms can be similar to those of a cold, although they tend to be more severe. Symptoms can include: dry hacking cough, moderate-to-high fever, sore throat, shaking chills, severe muscle or body aches, headache, stuffy and runny nose, profound fatigue. Some people may experience vomiting and diarrhea, but this is more common in children. Fluids and rest are the best way to treat the flu. Over-the-counter decongestants and pain relievers such as ibuprofen and paracetamol may control your symptoms and help you feel better. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent infection and severe outcomes caused by influenza viruses. The vaccine’s brand name is Vaxigrip. It is recommended that vaccinations be taken before or during the cold season. Kenya among other countries is in the Southern Hemisphere and this cold season is from March and could extend to October. The vaccinations take place yearly because the virus that causes flu mutates constantly.
